Menopause Treatment Options

Hormone Replacement Therapy

As with any treatment, hormone replacement therapy offers both benefits and risks. Consequently, it is appropriate for some women, yet not for others. By replacing the hormones estrogen and progesterone, many women get relief from such menopausal symptoms and can also combat significant long-term health problems such as osteoporosis, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Mood swings and short-term memory may also be improved. Hormone replacement therapy may be in the form of pills, patches, a vaginal cream or subcutaneous pellets, which are inserted under the skin for a duration of three to four months.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

You must be committed to protecting and enhancing your health before, during and after menopause. Being proactive can prevent or reduce health problems later. The Veranda will schedule visits and health screenings to monitor you for cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and other conditions. We will also provide you with information so you can perform self breast exams.

Diet Supplements and Herbal Remedies

Our health care professionals will be happy to work with you to develop a balanced diet that includes calcium or other nutrients your body may need. If appropriate, we’ll prescribe diet supplements and/or medications and are prepared to discuss natural herbal products that may help with symptoms. We’ll also offer guidance regarding a program of regular exercise. If depression, mood swings or other emotional problems are experienced, drug therapy or counseling may also be suggested to help you regain your mental equilibrium.
